Here's What You Need
Get your walkin' gear
Many people don't need much more than a pair of shoes to get started, but as with many other activities, you can bring along some extras.
Walking Shoes
Comfortable shoes are essential to begin a walking program and there are many options available when it comes to walking shoes. Shoes can range from very basic to those with different specialty features for comfort and style. Prices vary widely depending on whether you buy a basic shoe or one with more features. Whatever shoes you choose, be sure it's a comfortable pair you'll want to keep walkin' in! It should be comfortable as soon as you try it on - if you think a pair needs to be "broken in," you don't need to purchase them! Be sure you purchase shoes specifically designed for walking rather than running. These two are different because the motion used in a correct walking technique is very different from that of a correct running technique. Wearing a running shoe could interfere with your stride when you walk.
Comfortable Clothing
Comfort is essential to a productive fitness session. A key factor in choosing proper clothing is the weather, especially if you are planning to walk outdoors. In Mississippi, we enjoy moderate temperatures throughout much of the year. While our summers are subject to high heat and humidity, our winters are mostly mild with the occasional cold spell. In the summer, dress in light-colored, lightweight clothing to stay as cool as possible. Special moisture-wicking clothing can help draw moisture away from your skin to keep you cool. In colder weather, dress in several light layers that you can shed as you warm up. Moisture wicking socks can help keep your feet more comfortable by drawing moisture away from your foot and keeping your feet drier. If your socks become too wet, you are more likely to develop blisters.
Water bottle (and fanny pack)
If you'll be walking in the heat or for long distances, have one or more water bottles available. If you put water bottles in a fanny pack, they're simple to carry and you have room for keys, ID, cell phone, etc.
Electronic gadgets
While these are nice extras, you don't necessarily need them. There are a variety of pedometers and GPS devices that can track your steps, distance, location and even the number of calories you burn. The most important thing, though, is to just get moving for 30 minutes a day!
Skin care
Protect your skin. Hats provide shade and sunscreen keeps hazardous rays from causing damage. In the cold, cover up enough to prevent frostbite on your extremities-even your ears and nose.
Reading material
We're not suggesting you read while you're walking! But some people get into walking enough to want to learn more, and that's why these publications exist. Check the magazine rack and shelves at your local bookstore for information on walking and other fitness topics in general. Some suggestions include:
