More than 145,000 people have requested information since Let's Go Walkin' Mississippi began in October 2006, and many have made huge strides in their efforts to be healthier. Many have lost weight, improved health conditions or have accomplished something they never dreamed possible. Here are some of the exciting things happening across Mississippi.
Mississippi Takes a Walk Down Main Street - Again!
The "Let's Go Walkin' Down Main Street Mississippi" event, held in partnership with the Mississippi Main Street Association, hopes to encourage people to become more active and bring attention to walkable downtown areas. Twenty-eight communities participated in the event this year. In Hancock County, participants strolled down Second Street in Halloween attire with Bay High School's Drum line leading the way. Organizers even held a costume contest for children and adults, along with music and art projects. Kosciusko also enjoyed a large turnout with more than 75 people in attendance including members of the Oprah Winfrey Boys & Girls Club, the Kosciusko High School football, softball and Beta club. "These communities are taking steps to promote healthy lifestyles by hosting this event in their hometowns," said John Sewell, Director of Corporate Communications with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi. "Walking is an excellent form of exercise, which promotes a healthy body and healthy mind in as little as 30 minutes a day, five days a week." "The Mississippi Main Street Association was proud to partner with Let's Go Walkin' Mississippi for the second year as we work toward the goal of healthier communities," said Bob Wilson, Executive Director for the Mississippi Main Street Association. "Visitors in our downtown areas are essential to promote our local businesses, and walking in our downtown areas is great for business and for a person's health."
