My School Walks
Establishing a walking program at your school can benefit everyone - healthier students are more attentive and perform better in the classroom when physical activity is a priority. Consider establishing a wellness council at your school to plan and promote physical activity, including a structured walking program. Here are some tips on starting your own walking program:
- Challenge faculty, staff and students to walk a specific amount of time each day or over the course of a week.
- Educate students on the importance of being active and the health benefits they can expect now and throughout their life by being active. Also demonstrate the correct way to walk to avoid injury and gain the most benefits.
- Choose a designated location to walk, whether it is on school grounds or another safe location.
- Reward staff and students for participating and honor those who walk the longest distance, longest time, etc.
